Spanish for Firefighters and EMS - Instructor Guide

The Instructor Guide includes a suggested schedule of topics for each classroom session along with techniques and tips for leading classroom sessions in an enjoyable and effective environment. These are the same techniques developed and used by PSLT with our existing clients.

Guidance is also provided for evaluating each attendee's progress - each class builds on the previous class so if an attendee is struggling then the earlier this is identified and addressed the better for the attendee.

Prospective instructors should be English/ Spanish bi-lingual and familiar with Latino culture and firefighter/EMS situations. Some public speaking or adult teaching experience is helpful but not necessary.

For each classroom session, guidance is provided as follows:

  • objectives

  • topics

  • materials

  • techniques

  • related colloquial expressions and

  • homework assignments

The instructor will receive up to two hours of individual coaching from the course developer, Alejandra Gomez, and will be certified by PSLT to lead the training course "Spanish for Firefighters and EMS" on successful completion of the coaching. Certified instructors will have access to the downloads section of our web site where hundreds of flash cards are available containing key words and expressions.

Please take a look at Session 1 in the Instructor Guide to see some of these techniques described and then click here to read the instructor guidance for session 8 which covers breathing problems, chest pains and abdominal disorder.

The student materials for this session can be seen and heard below.

Please note that the student transcript and the instructor guidance will each open in a separate "pop-up" window. If you have "pop-up blocking" enabled in your security software, or for example in your Google Toolbar, this should be disabled (note: Ctrl and Click will often temporarily bypass pop-up blocking).
